Leave Tony Veitch Alone

For the last 2 weeks or so, one of the biggest news stories has been about how a former sports presenter (or something), Tony Veitch, allegedly beat up his wife a few years ago.

I'm fed up with it. It's really pissing me off. Leave the man alone! Basically all it is, is a whole bunch of self-righteous people making the most of an opportunity to gossip about someone who's well known. Everyone is saying what an evil man he is to beat up his wife, talking about him as though he was some sort of sub-human, and as though these people actually thought they were better people than him!

Well here's a news headline for everyone - you're not. Tony Veitch is no better or worse a person than you are. So sit down, shut up, and give the man some privacy to deal with this.

Everyone is crying out about how bad it is that he beat up his wife. Yes it is bad, but wives are being beaten up all across Auckland every night of the week. Where are all the people up in arms over that?? If so many people are upset over a man beating up his wife, why isn't domestic abuse headlining the news every night of the week? Why aren't people, who feel so strongly about a celebrity beating up his wife, out in the street campaigning against domestic abuse?

Here's why. Because no one actually cares. No one wants to recognise a problem in society or to try and fix it. All they want is someone to gossip about, so they can feel good about themselves. Self-righteous hypocrites.

Personally I haven't really paid much attention to this but I've gotta say that when a person in the public spotlight does something like throw their wife down a flight of stairs and kick her then we can't exactly say "oh, well, that's ok, everyone makes mistakes".

Perhaps it's true that the media are over covering this story and undercovering the story that occurs daily all over the country but it's also true that we can't just ignore something like this when it comes to light.
