Here We Go Again
Only three days from the first day of Semester One. I'm all enrolled and sorted out, and starting to mentally gear up for the coming year. In terms of workload, this year promises to be the big one - simply because of the year long research project that every fourth year engineering student has to do.
So, like I normally do before a new semester starts, this is my timetable for semester one:
The room numbers aren't on it yet, I'll probably add them to it on Sunday, because the closer to semester start, the more likely they are to be right.
The classes are:
Mecheng 340: Mechanics of Materials 2
The sequel to Mechanics of Materials 1, which I took last year. This paper's supposed to be relatively easy, but it uses a completely different textbook to MoM1, which is annoying. Three of the four lectures for this class are at 8am, so guess which class I'll be rarely turning up to. You can say I should go to class, and that its bad if I don't, to which I will say that going to an 8am class requires me to get up, or at least be awake, by around 5.30am. It is physically impossible for me to be awake at 5.30am four days out of seven (at least while I'm doing Engineering at uni), and therefore I won't be going to many of these classes.
Enggen 303: Management for Engineers
The one paper that noone likes. The only people who would enjoy doing this paper are the engineers who are doing a Commerce conjoint. However, they're the only people who aren't required to do it. Engineers are here to design things, not learn management and business techniques. We hate this paper! Not to mention that it requires hours and hours of reading notes. Not surprising that it had a relatively high failure rate last year, and so I'll have a couple of friends doing it with me this year.
Mecheng 431: Mechanical Design 4
The final design paper of the course. This one promises to be just like all the others - full of projects requiring massive amounts of work, particularly the night before it's due. Still, some of my best memories of uni involve frantically trying to finish projects late in the evening. The fact that it has two tutorials is probably a sign that it will involve a lot of work.
Mecheng 461A: Research Project Part A
The big momma. The paper that basically defines your fourth year, and in fact most of your degree. This is the paper you spend second and third year looking towards. This paper, I'm told, completely obliterates all traces of free time, as well as all the holidays. Fortunately you complete the project in pairs. My partner and I still haven't confirmed what ours will be on, but at the moment we're hoping it will be on building aerodynamics. More on that as it happens. Should be fun.
This is the first semester that I haven't enrolled in an Arts paper. That's because I still plan on dropping the BA. I'll probably come back to it when I'm 40, or something.
There's been a couple of new blogs appearing on my blog links on the left over the last week or so.

I loved my research paper. I did it last year and because I loved it I worked really hard and managed an A+ which was completely freaking awesome :D
And yes, 8am classes suck. But at least you have Mondays "off" (yeah, you probably should go to those classes but I really can't talk, I didn't even know where one of my lectures was until week 6 last year because I just never went to that class) :P
