World Empire
There are two items in the news at the moment that demonstrate the emerging global empire. The first is the creation of the Mediterranean Union, a larger and looser version of the European Union, consisting of the EU and all nations that border the Mediterranean. The second is the application in the International Criminal Court for a warrant for the arrest of the President of Sudan.
That's right. An international organisation is overriding the sovereignty of a nation in order to arrest its leader for genocide. It's obviousuly not unusual for leaders to be deposed or made to pay for committing genocide, but traditionally they're captured by an invader or deposed in a civil war, not arrested like an ordinary man off the street. The leaders of nations are no longer the people with the power.
The Mediterranean Union is just another in a long list of Unions forming in the world today. The European Union, African Union, and South American Union already exist. The North American Union is currently in the works, the Pacific Union has been suggested, and various Unions have been suggested in Asia.
It really makes you ask though - national leaders no longer really hold much power - no more than city councils, except on a larger scale - so who holds the real power then? Who is in charge of all the various unions and international organisations that are starting to make all the decisions? Who's going to be in charge of them once they've started uniting one by one into a massive single global government? Imagining a global democracy where political parties can form and everyone can vote for the party they want to lead the world seems pretty idealistic. Eventually the whole world is going to be run by one person or group of people, and I bet you it happens within the next 10 years.
