Month of Horror
My legs are burnt, my feet are burnt, my hands are burnt, and my arms are slightly browner. This week was shaping up to be an awesome summer week, with all the essentials (sun, sand, surf, and a tent in a campground a long way from Auckland). We were going to be in Papamoa from the 29th until today, but unfortunately Josh got food poisoning on the first night (don't eat fish from Chinese takeaways in Papmoa), so we abandoned the holiday on the 31st, right before New Years. I spent my New Years on top of Mt Eden with a whole lot of other people, standing next to a slightly confused herd of cows, watching the fireworks on the Sky Tower.
I have to say, downtown at night is pretty beautiful. The fireworks weren't that great though. Happy New Year. The best part was probably driving there and back again.
That reminds me, I've ordered a couple of black lights to put in my car. I'm going to put black lights above the rearview mirror, and a blue light in the centre. It should look pretty cool. I also want to put white lights in the door. I'm going to need to carry a torch in the glovebox so I can actually see during the times when I actually need light in the car at night. My mum said something very surprising yesterday - she said I should get neons. I'm considering it - I've always thought neons look cool. If I do get them I'd probably try getting black lights for them as well.
But before I do anything else I need to get speakers and a sub. That means getting an amp, and either getting or making a sub box too. My aim is to have all that in and wired up by the end of January. That and to be enrolled for my classes this semester. I really need to get on to that.
I saw I Am Legend this morning. I have to say its one of the best horrors I've ever seen (not that I've seen many). It's certainly one of the best horrors to be released in the last few years. It seems to me that horror is a genre that is very hard to do. A lot of directors just cant seem to get it right. Many of the horrors I've seen rely on scenes that make you jump or that gross you out in order to scare you. I think this is possibly because most of the ideas people have for a horror movie have already been done - and once an idea's been done you can't repeat it without cheapening it. For example, zombie movies. They all have the same idea - part of the population gets turned into cannibalistic zombies that attack the heroes who have to fight to survive. Once you've seen one, the rest of them just aren't scary.
Until you see I Am Legend. This movie is scary. There were bits in this movie where I and everyone I've talked to about it all got completely freaked out! Sure this movie's a zombie movie, but it's a zombie movie with a difference. You will get scared in this movie.
The movie isn't just good because it's scary though - Will Smith is great in the role of the guy who has been on his own for three years with no-one but his dog for company, the musical score is brilliant - simply because there isn't one for a lot of the movie - which just makes the scary and the emotional scenes all the more powerful. What's more the ending isn't predictable. In fact it's very different to what I thought would happen.
Horrors seem to be the thing this month - AvP2 comes out next week. It looks much closer to the original horror of the original Alien and Predator movies than the first Alien vs Predator movie did. That movie was a joke.
Then the week after is Cloverfield. I think the main difference between this movie and something like Godzilla (which people are afraid it will be a copy of) is that this movie seems to be less about monsters attacking a city, and more about a group of people trying to survive the attack while being hunted by a mysterious foe. I think this movie is going to be a horror as well.
Then the week after that is 30 Days of Night. This looks a bit like your typical vampire/zombie horror (although I've only seen the trailer once I think). Might be good. I'm not a fan of vampire movies (or vampires in general) so it would have to pretty good for me to see it.
