Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American anime-styled cartoon TV show. It's meant to be a kids show, but it's become massively popular with kids and adults alike. Its most viewed episode was watched by 4.4 million people on Nickelodeon.
It's set in a fictional world, home to humans, spirits, and fantasy animals. Human civilisation is divided into four cultures - the Air Nomads, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, and the Fire Nation. Each culture is named for the one of the four classical elements (earth, fire, water, air) that its culture is centered around. Within each culture there is a group of people who are able to "bend" their native element - ie. they can master the ability to manipulate it.
Every generation there is one person able to master all for elements. This is the Avatar - the spirit of the planet in human form. When one Avatar dies, the next one is born in the next culture in the cycle. The Avatar is the most powerful being on the planet, and is responsible for keeping order and peace between the four cultures.
100 years before the events of the show, the current Avatar, Aang, who was only 12 years old, mysteriously disappeared. Shortly after, the Fire Nation launched a massive attack on the rest of the world, with the intention of world domination.
100 years later, in the time that the show is set, war has been raging for a century. The Air Nomads are utterly destroyed, the Water Tribes are scattered, with most clustered at the north and south poles, and the massive Earth Kingdom is the only culture still able to resist the Fire Nation's advances. One day, a teenage brother and sister (Sokka and Katara) from the Southern Water Tribe come across an unusual iceberg - and inside is the Avatar, cyrogenicly frozen. They manage to free him, and the story is basically about how the three of them set off to fulfill the Avatar's duty - to end the war between the cultures by confronting and defeating the Fire Lord.
It also tells the parallel story of a young prince of the Fire Nation, Prince Zuko, heir to the throne and banished from his home, and his quest to find and capture the Avatar, which is the only way he will be allowed back home. However his story becomes more about his quest to find himself.
The series is incredibly popular, with two seasons aired and the 3rd and final one coming out on September 21st. There are countless action figures, two Lego sets, a video game, and a roller-coaster based on the show, and Paramount Pictures have signed up for three live action movies based on the series.
When I was first introduced to the show, I thought "oh yeah, sounds pretty interesting." After I saw the first episode I thought "Yea it's ok." After I saw the second I thought "It's pretty cool! I'll watch the third." Then when I watched the third I was like "I gotta see more!!!"
Ever since then I've been yet another of the countless Avatar fans! It's seriously addictive.
If you're interested in watching it, there's a site where u can download them for free, but the link's been taken off Wikipedia, so I don't know what it is. Or you could borrow mine ;)
